Dr. John Schmitz, Ph.D., CFA - President & CIO

Dr. Schmitz is an expert in the research, development and implementation of quantitative investment management processes, including real-time management of the resulting portfolios. 

Dr. Schmitz developed the investment management processes and technology necessary to manage global long-short market neutral equity strategies.

During his studies and research Dr. Schmitz spent extensive time consulting on portfolio management, and has considerable money management experience having held several senior money management positions.

Upon completion of his Ph.D. in 1997, Dr. Schmitz joined Alpha Strategic Partners Inc. as Vice President of Investment Management and Research, where he formed a quantitative investment management department, initiating and managing several Canadian and U.S. equity mutual funds.  Alpha distributed the funds through Financial Concept Group Inc., a subsidiary of Midland Walwyn and later Merrill Lynch.

In 1999, John moved to be Senior Vice President of Investments at MAXXUM Fund Management Inc., a subsidiary of Investors Group and later Mackenzie Financial Corporation, where the SciVest Market Neutral Equity Fund was first launched.

As an active researcher in the areas of investments and portfolio management, he has published a number of peer-reviewed articles in both academic and practitioner journals, and has presented this research at a number of academic conferences.  Dr. Schmitz also taught a senior-level Investments course at the Joseph L. Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto.

In addition to his Ph.D. in Business Administration (Finance) from the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario, he holds a Bachelor of Engineering Science (BESc), a degree in Mechanical Engineering, and an Honours Bachelor of Arts (BA). He has a Degree in Economics from the University of Western Ontario, as well as a Master of Arts (MA) Degree in Economics from University of Toronto, and holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation.
